The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: The MBE or Essays, When You Fail the Florida Bar Exam

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

What happens if you only pass one section of the bar but fail the overall bar in Florida? Should you sit for that section that you failed or do you take the entire bar exam over again? I think it depends on which section you passed.

In this possible scenario, say you passed the Florida section but failed the MBE. Should you take the Florida section again to get carry-over points for your MBE score? It depends on what your MBE score is. I usually tell my students that you have to stay competitive in the MBE and let your extra points on the Florida section pull you over the top. It is my experience that many students who pass the bar, do not pass the MBE or only have a 1-5 point pass on the MBE. That is why doing well on the Florida essays for those extra overage points can help you pass the overall bar, even if you do not pass the MBE.

First, evaluate your scores. The closer you are to the magic 136, the better you are to make improvements in the MBE for an outright 136 or above.

However, we have seen that the national mean score for the MBE is probably at its lowest in years. This low mean score had a profound effect on Florida’s pass rate. In light of the mean score, many Florida repeat takers, only taking the MBE, failed miserably. It was extremely hard to make that magical 136 when that was the mean score is lower. How do these low national mean scores affect your decision in light of this new reality?

Evaluate your essay scores. Did you pass the essays with a large margin? If you did, it’s an easier decision to make – you obviously write well and 3 more essays won’t freak you out. If you sharpen up your writing with some more practice essays, you could get maybe another 5-10 points to bring over to your MBE scores. If you passed with only points to spare, you may not be able to pass another 3 more essays.
That’s the pros and cons of your situation. You must make the decision for yourself. Of course, it is easier to concentrate on only one section of the bar and if you think you can pull up your score on one section alone, then go for that one section alone. But you want to make sure that your second attempt is your last attempt. So do anything and everything to make that happen.

Once you fail the bar you would better spend your money on a private tutor, if a repeater is to spend any more money in the process. It is expensive, but working one on one with a qualified (and I mean qualified) tutor will push you over the finish line. No price is too much to get you to your goal and start your life as a lawyer. A private tutor can help with the subject material, motivate you and keep up your confidence. Bar Professors, as a Florida bar tutor and an MBE tutor, has had much success with Florida repeat takers.

Obtaining a Bar Professors’ bar exam tutor will help you pass. Many students who are repeat bar takers need a bar exam coach to help them improve their writing and analytical skills so they can properly navigate through the bar exam. A structured, personalized program is the key to passing the bar for repeat takers.

Bar Professors will also be conducting an MBE seminar in Raleigh, N.C., Miami and Orlando. Sign up now to reserve your space.

The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: Repeat Florida Bar Exam Takers: Why Did You Fail And How Bar Professors Can Help You

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

Most law students fail the Florida Bar Exam for three major reasons:

1. Repeat Bar Takers revert back to bad writing habits and poor analytical skills developed in law school

Under the pressures of the bar exam, many students revert back to bad habits. These bad habits allowed them to graduate from law school, but will be the kiss of death on the bar. Some of the bad habits include, not organizing your answer, no line by line analysis and not answering the call of the question.

Bar Professors will teach you the skills to analyze both the essays and the MBE, with improvement on better writing analysis.

2. Repeat Bar Takers have poor preparation and time management skills

Many law students start their bar preparation entirely too late, leaving most in a rush mode. For the upcoming February 2016 bar, your preparation should begin earlier rather than later. You should allow yourself 5 to 6 hours per day for studying. But more importantly, studying correctly is the key. You need to write and answer many essays and MBE questions. Your answers must be evaluated by a private tutor.

Bar Professors puts each student on a two week schedule so that the student is evaluated frequently. In addition, Bar Professors evaluates every essay the student writes and every MBE exam the student takes, looking for areas in which the student can improve.

3. Repeat Bar Takers don’t really believe that they will pass

You must have a belief that you will pass. Get rid of all negative thoughts, people and things. You must truly believe that you will pass. You must say this every single day prior to the bar and you must have the confidence to succeed.

Bar Professors know that taking the bar exam as a repeat taker can be an isolating experience. Bar Professors helps the student keep motivated and confident through interaction with the Florida bar tutor.

The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: Repeat Florida Bar Exam Takers: A Review of Your Bar Exam Scores

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

The Florida bar exam results have come out and all the repeat takers have gotten their letter telling them the breakdown of the scores. Here is the way the grading is done in Florida.

Grading the Florida Bar Exam

The MBE & Florida sections are weighted equally on the Florida Bar Exam. A combined weighted score of 136 is required to pass the Florida Bar Exam. It doesn’t matter if your score in one section or the other is below the 136 – it’s the average score that matters. So basically you can fail the FL or the MBE section and still pass the FL bar exam if your overall score is at least 136.

Each examination paper produced by an applicant on the General Bar Examination will be separately graded. The sum of the converted section scores is the total score for Part A. MBE scores (Part B) are the scaled scores on the MBE provided by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. On the Florida portion of the bar, each essay is worth 100 points for a 300 point total. The multiple choice questions are worth 100 points total, so each question is approximately 1 point each. There are usually 10 experimental questions. The average essay score is around 40 points, requiring you to get your remaining points on the multiple choice questions.

Depending on the difficulty of the essay question and the average grade, the Board of Bar Examiners may adjust your score either downward or upward. The Board does not adjust the multiple choice questions – there are what they are and the point totals do not change.
Review your bar scores and ask yourself how you can improve your scores when you retake the bar exam in February. Obtaining a Bar Professors

Florida bar exam tutor will help you pass. Many students who are repeat bar takers need a bar exam coach to help them improve their writing and analytical skills so they can properly navigate through the Florida bar exam. Remember, the Florida bar exam is unique and more difficult to pass than other jurisdictions. This structured, personalized program is the key to passing the bar for repeat takers.

The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: The Crying Game 2

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

The Crying Game 2 is all about the MBE push back.

If you have read Bar Professors tweets, you know that the average score on the MBE on the July bar exam fell 1.6 points from the previous year, reaching its lowest level since 1988, according to data provided by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The mean score on the July bar exam was 139.9, down from 141.5 in July 2014.

Of course, the NCBE doesn’t blame the test but the law students. The pile-on has begun with deans and law professors all blaming the students that they created. Fearing for their own jobs, the deans and law professors are saying that they’ve been admitting students with lower qualifications who then fail the bar exam. It seems like it’s a problem the law schools have created, however, it’s this author’s opinion that the teaching at law schools is the real culprit.

In speaking with students, they feel the test is harder because this is the first July when Civil Procedure has been tested in “mass” numbers. The NCBE, however, disputes this assessment, saying that the students did poorly across the board in all 7 subjects.

Whatever created this problem, we do know that performance on the bar exam has continued to dip down to levels we have never seen and it appears that this is not an aberration, but a new realty.

Here are the changes in overall bar pass rate, from July 2014 over July 2015 for some of the states already reported.

Florida, -2 points (July 2014 – 71%; July 2015: 68.9%)
Kansas, -3 points (July 2014: 79%; July 2015: 76%)
Mississippi, -27 points (July 2014: 78%; July 2015: 51%)
Missouri, -1 point (July 2014: 85%; July 2015: 84%)
Montana, -2 points (July 2014: 64%; July 2015: 62%)
New Mexico, -12 points (July 2014: 84%; July 2015: 72%)
North Carolina, -4 points (July 2014: 71%; July 2015: 67%)
Oklahoma, -11 points (July 2014: 79%; July 2015: 68%)
Washington, -1 point (July 2014: 77%; July 2015: 76%)
West Virginia, -5 points (July 2014: 74%; July 2015: 69%)
Wisconsin, -10 points (July 2014: 75%; July 2015: 65%)

So far, one of the few states that have gone up, Iowa, is now switching to the UBE starting in February. A mere coincidence? Perhaps not.

Nevertheless, the reality is that you must pass the bar exam. Bar Professors can help you succeed and guide you through the areas that will help you pass the bar exam and begin your life as a lawyer. Don’t wait until you take the bar 2 or 3 or even 5 times – get help now and get the bar exam behind you.

First, 6 out of the 11 Florida law schools was below the state average of 68.9% and 4 law schools scored below 60%. Moreover, the difference between the highest bar percentage of 89% by FIU and Ave Maria, the lowest scoring school, at 47% was 42 points.

We have interviewed many people on this issue, from legal schools, bar experts, law professors and even law students. Their conclusions are that, the Florida bar exam is becoming less predictable in light of the new tested subjects. Many students go into the bar exam not understanding the magnitude of the exam and the proper methodology needed to pass. Further, the additional MBE subject has trended lower MBE scores nationwide. Of course, the law students at the lower tier schools are blaming their poor performance on their law schools' doorstep, while the deans and law professors are blaming the law students for not preparing sufficiently.

Nevertheless, despite the blame game, there is one inescapable conclusion – you must pass the bar exam. Bar Professors can help you succeed and guide you through the areas that will help you pass the bar exam and begin your life as a lawyer. We have been talking with students all morning. The questions we’ve been asked more frequently is “what should I do if I was unsuccessful on the Florida Bar Exam?” First, let the shock of failing the bar subside with a few days of reflection. Clearly, this may be one of your greatest disappointments, but don’t let it control or define who you are. You can pass the bar exam in February 2016. Get right back up and say, “I will pass in February 2016.”

Ok, now let’s start. Do not repeat the same class, study plan or approach you used the last time. It did not work. Coming close on the bar is good only in horse shoes. One size does not fit all. Hard work and having a study plan and study strategy will pay off. Say to yourself, “I will be a lawyer.”

You want to get the bar exam behind you and start your new life as a lawyer. Don’t dither or waste time with the “what ifs”. Stay focused and true to your goal to pass.

Obtaining a Bar Professors Florida bar exam tutor will help you pass.

Above all, never give up.

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

The Florida Bar Exam Results for July 2015 will come out on Monday, September 21st. There is no magical time it comes out, although the results usually come out around 10 am. The results came out around 9 am one year, another year, around noon – so anywhere around 9:30 to 12 noon is your window to keep hitting the refresh button.

Florida releases the numbers, not the names of the applicants and the site reveals just pass or fail of both Part A (the Florida section) and Part B (the MBE section) and the overall pass or fail. When you look up your number there will be 4 columns: your number, pass, pass, pass. The last pass is your ticket for your law license. You can fail a section of the Florida bar, and with enough carry over points, you can pass overall. So you will see some scores, like fail, pass, pass or pass, fail, pass. That’s ok, because that applicant has passed the Florida bar exam. Look at the final column and you’ll know whether you passed or failed.

The Florida Board of Bar Examiners also releases the passing rate of the law schools, too, later in the afternoon. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners releases the passing rate of the law school to the law school first. Later that day, the Florida bar examiners then releases the passing rate of the law schools to the public. Florida only releases the first time taker rate and not the repeat takers rate, and not the overall pass rate. It’s unfortunate that Florida does not practice full transparency, because I have seen quite a few law schools who try to fudge the overall rate and the repeat taker rate to something higher than what it really is – then tell their students who have failed, that all they need to do is keep taking it and they will eventually pass. I have seen students taking the exam 6, 8, 10 times. We know you need a bar tutor to help you get over the finish line. Bar Professors is offering a discount on its tutorials if you contact us on Monday.

The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: Missouri’s Bar Exam Results and Statistics for the UBE

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

The Missouri bar exam results for July 2015 were released on Tuesday, September 15th. An examination of the statistics prove to be very interesting.

First, Missouri is a UBE state, one of 15 states (NY will be #16 in July 2016, Iowa will be #17 in February 2016)).
The overall pass rate for Missouri was 84%. The first time taker pass rate was 86.7%, the second time taker pass rate was 60% and the third time plus pass rate was 41.9%.

But look at the way the average MBE scores go down for repeat takers. The average MBE scores overall were 142.5. For first time takers it was 143.8, for second time takers it was 130.5 and for the third time and beyond, it was 124.1.

Similarly, let’s look at the essay scores. The overall average essay score was 142.6. For first time takers, it was 143.8 (identical to the MBE scores), for second time takers, the essay average was 130.2, and the third time takers and beyond, the essay average was 125.7.

It is clear to see that the repeat takers, across the board, have much lower average scores. For repeat takers, those average scores must change for you to have a chance at passing the bar exam. A private one-on-one tutoring service, like Bar Professors, can help you.

The highest UBE Total Score 355.0; the lowest UBE total score was 211.0

The highest MBE score was 182.6; the lowest MBE score was 98.7

The highest essay scaled was 180.4; the lowest Essay scaled was 90.6

The July 2015 Bar Exam Results: A Different Mindset for the North Carolina Bar Repeat Takers

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, MEE, UBE New York, Texas and California. Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

Over 75% of the repeat takers failed the bar exam in North Carolina. You cannot keep the same mindset as you begin your journey of retaking the bar exam in February.

As a North Carolina repeat taker, you must take the bar exam again. It’s time to refocus again on the bar. Don’t wait the 30 days until you get your score. Take action now.

Taking the exam again will call for a change in approach, strategy, and preparation for you to pass that final hurdle in fulfilling your dream of becoming a lawyer. The bar exam is not an academic exercise. The bar examiners want to know whether you are prepared to practice law.
Albert Einstein stated that “we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Don’t do the same thing you did for the first bar you took. Your approach must be different than ever before. Employ a private bar tutor, like Bar Professors, who can work one on one with you to keep you sharp and motivated and you will be on the way to passing the bar. Bar Professors has a unique cross training system that keeps the students working towards their goals of passing the bar exam. We grade your essays and probe areas where you need improvement. We have a weekly discussion lecture on substantive law. We talk about strategy, speed and accuracy and Bar Professors drills the student, using repetition, as a means of learning. We have had much success with students who have taken the bar exam two, three and even eight times.
