The February 2019 Bar Exam: It’s Not Too Early to Start the Study Process

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for UBE North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, UBE, Texas and California.  Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

Many students have stated or complained that “it’s too early to start studying”.  These students are sadly misinformed and are getting incorrect information. Don’t forget we are seeing 34 year lows on the MBE, 67 year lows in California and we have seen a decline in pass rates these last few bar exam cycles..  That’s because the exams are getting harder and, unfortunately, too few students are taking their job of passing the bar exam seriously.  There is a lot of subjects to learn and review.  You must put effort and stamina in your studies.  This is not a passive review. You must work and you must work hard.

February 2019 bar exam is 3 months away. For repeat takers, it's time to start the study process. Don't let anyone tell you it's too early, or that you will burn yourself out. That's not true. Start studying a couple of hours a day; small bites of the material, until you are ready to immerse yourself with your task. February will come around much, much faster than you think it will. Don't sabotage your studies by waiting until the last minute. It doesn't work that way. You only get better with work and practice.

For repeat takers, if have taken the bar exam multiple times and are still not getting the results you want, think about getting a Bar Professors’ tutor. There is obviously something about the way you study or how you study that is not producing results for you. A Bar Professors’ tutor can set up a study plan with you, discuss areas of the bar exam materials that you are not getting and keep you motivated and less isolated.

Remember, you have much work to do and many subjects to master before the February bar exam.

The February 2019 Bar Exam: The Big Divide: New York Law Schools Bar Exam Results - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for UBE North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, UBE, Texas and California.  Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

In New York, the bar exam pass results were mixed.  6 schools performed above the statewide average of 83% for first-time test takers at ABA accredited law schools while 9 schools were under the statewide average. The 83% was down 3% from the year before. The average was 81% for first-time test takers from New York law schools.

The gap between the best and worst-performing New York law schools widened to almost 50% this July 2018.   Graduates of New York’s top two law schools performed well on the July bar exam, but passing rates decreased at 12 New York schools and 5 law schools saw steep declines.
At one-third of the state’s 15 schools, the pass rates dropped by more than 8%. 3 schools saw double-digit declines.

Less than half of Touro Law Center graduates passed. Touro’s pass rate was 16.2% lower than last year. At The City University of New York School of Law, the passing rate declined 13%. Pace University saw a decline of 11.6%, Hofstra University dropped 8.4%  and Syracuse University College of Law declined by 8.2%.

New York’s plummeting scores mirror performance on the bar examination nationwide, which sunk to a 34-year low.

While Albany Law School, Columbia Law School and New York University School of Law improved their performance between 2017 and 2018, Albany’s 75.9% pass rate was still 6.8% below the school’s score in 2016.

Graduates of Cornell Law School and Fordham University School of Law did not perform as well as last year but the declines were moderate. Cornell which had a 94% pass rate, went down 1.6% and Fordham declined 4.4%.

St. John’s University School of Law had a 86.7% pass rate although St. John’s bar pass rate dipped 2.5%.

At 72.3%, Brooklyn Law School was down 6.3%.

The July 2018 Bar Exam: The Nightmare Bar Exam Results: The Real Horror Story

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for UBE North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, UBE, Texas and California.  Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

With the release of California’s bar exam results, the July 2018 bar cycle has come to a horrible and miserable end of mass annihilation.

We can call that hyperbole, but a close examination of the July 2018 results show that clear across state lines, students faired quite poorly this bar cycle.

First, we learned that the MBE scores sank to a new 34-year low. The NCBE announced that the average score on the MBE in July fell 2.2 points to 139.5.  The 2.2-point drop in the July 2018 average MBE score comes on the heels of a 10-year low for the February 2018 exam.  The NCBE warned at that time, that the low MBE scores meant that state bar exam pass rates would decline.  That was an understatement.

On average, many states had a 4% to 5% decrease in their pass rates from a year ago.

California hit a 67 year low with a 40.7 pass rate, down 9% from last July 2017.
Texas fell over 7% points from last year.
New York fell by 5% points.
Florida fell by 4% points.
Oregon fell by 5% points.
Alabama fell by 5% points.
Missouri fell by 9% points
DC fell by 5% points.
Nevada fell by 9% points.
Ohio fell by 7% points.
Oklahoma fell by 6% points
Colorado fell by 7%
New Jersey fell by 7% points
North Carolina fell by 5%
Indiana and Iowa fell by 4%
Massachusetts and Pennsylvania fell by 3%.

These 18 states are a representative sample of the states’ pass rates.  Some states like Virginia did go up, some states like Arizona stayed the same.

In general, we can see that these statistics are alarming, shocking and not acceptable. These weak results for the bar exam and, especially, its repeat takers do not bode well for the next bar cycle.

Nevertheless, there is one inescapable conclusion – you must pass the bar exam.  Bar Professors can help you succeed and guide you through the areas that will help you pass the bar exam and begin your life as a lawyer.  Don’t wait until you take the bar 2 or 3 or even 5 times – get help now and get the bar exam behind you.

The July 2018 Bar Exam: The California Blues - Nearly 60% Failed the California Bar Exam

Bar Professors Provides Private Tutoring for UBE North Carolina, Florida, the MBE, UBE, Texas and California.  Sign up for our MBE/Essays Seminars at www.barprofessors.com.

The pass rate for the July 2018 California bar exam plunged to a 67-year low for the July bar exam with just 40.7% who passed the bar exam.

The scores mark an 9% drop from July 2017. The 55% pass rate for first-time test-takers was down 8 points from last year.

The results mirror lower bar scores in other states. The percentage of successful test-takers in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Florida and Indiana all dropped. And the average score nationally on the MBE fell to a 34 year low.

First time test-takers from California-based, American Bar Association-approved schools continued to comparatively do better on the exam, posting a 64% pass rate, although it was significantly down from last years’ 70% pass rate.  The out of state ABA students passed at only a 58%, down from 67% a year ago.  The CA accredited (but not ABA) passed at a 16% pass rate, down from 33% last year.

The repeat taker pass rate was shockingly bad.  For the CA ABA, the repeaters only passed at a 22% pass rate, down from 37% last year; the out of state ABA’s pass rate for repeaters was only 12%, down from 28% last July.  The California Accredited (but not ABA) repeaters pass rate was only 9%, down from 19% last year.  It gets worse from here for the unaccredited schools.  Just 16% of repeat test-takers passed.

Bar Professors has designed a writing and analytical program for repeat California bar takers in a tutorial format to address all writing and analytical deficiencies of the bar taker. We can help you fine tune your writing skills and MBE analysis. Bar Professors also specializes in tutoring foreign educated lawyers and LLM students. Contact us for help.
