Yesterday, the Florida bar exam results came out and, as we know, it was pretty low pass rate for first time takers. Yesterday, the pass rate for first time takers was 60%. These statistics only reflect first time takers. The repeat taker pass rate was shockingly much lower, considering that 67% of the applicants were repeat takers (1057 out of 1717 takers).
We
have never seen the pass rate of law schools like we saw yesterday. Out of 11
schools, 7 schools were below 56%. Nova’s
pass rate was 30% and St. Thomas was 47%, an outrageously low pass rate. The
non-Florida law schools (and we’re looking at Cooley in the mix) were 38%.
Why
were the scores so low?
There
is a combination of reasons. First, the MBE. We have seen changes in the last
couple of bar exam cycles and the mean average is now 132.58 nationwide. With
Florida’s standard to pass the MBE at 136, it is extremely hard to get that
magical 136 when the mean average is just 132.6. It makes the repeat bar exam
taker’s task almost impossible without help from a Bar Professor’s tutor.
Secondly, let’s look at the Florida section of the bar exam. Everyone was
surprised by the mean scores: Essay 1
(Contracts/Torts) was 36.4; Essay 2 (Torts/Ethics) was 48.7; Essay 3 (Fl Con
Law/Professionalism) was 38.
