The February 2017 Bar Exam: The Bar Exam Is More Difficult

The bar exam scores across the states have been substantially lower than in previous years. The MBE scores have also been lower.

If you have read Bar Professors tweets and blogs, you know that the average score on the MBE on the 2016 bar exam fell again from the previous year. The mean score on the 2016 bar exam was 138.5, down from 138.7 in 2015 and 140.5 in 2014.

Performance on the bar exam has continued to dip down to levels we have never seen and it appears that this is not an aberration, but a new realty.

Look at your own state scores. Most states have also dramatically dipped lower. The repeat takers fare even worse. To name only a few states:

In Florida, in 2014 72% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at 35% but in 2016, only 66% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at only a 27%.

In California in 2014 60% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at only a 29%, but in 2016, only 54% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at only a 25%

In North Carolina in 2014, 69% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at 41%, in 2016, 62% first time takers passed the bar exam with repeat takers passing at 33%

The reality is that you must pass the bar exam. Bar Professors can help you succeed and guide you through the areas that will help you pass the bar exam and begin your life as a lawyer. Don’t wait until you take the bar 2 or 3 or even 5 times – get help now and get the bar exam behind you.

This overall decline may be the new reality or may be a future trend.
