Goal achievement is the key to studying for the bar exam, especially if you are a repeat taker. You must keep your eye on your ultimate goal – passing the bar exam, along with figuring out how best to get to that ultimate goal of passing the bar exam.
How do you go about getting prepared for the bar exam? Let’s look at your study goals. You need to accomplish two things: the ultimate and overall goal, which is to pass the bar exam, and a day-to-day goal, which is to work towards achieving your ultimate goal.
It is not only about setting your goals for success, but also by developing the strategies to achieve the goal and then implementing the strategies.
Implementing the strategies of passing the bar exam include goals, each and every day that you must work on. We have discussed employing a study plan. That study plan should include a goal each day – i.e. working on the black letter law or working on improving your essays, MBEs or MPTs. Make sure the goal is a realistic goal, but make sure that you are moving forward each and every day. Implementing your strategy includes working on your weaknesses every day so that you can improve your performance when it comes time to sit for your bar exam.
Remember that studying for the bar exam is a journey that must be accomplished in incremental steps.

The February 2013 Bar Exam: Preparation, Success and Training
Bar Professors will begin the process of discussing important topics to get you ready for the February 2013 bar exam. Although this advise is mainly for repeat takers, our advice can be used for those taking the bar exam for the first time.
Getting ready for the February 2013 bar exam is all about preparation. Preparation includes your mental attitude as well as your outward preparation. I often compare taking the bar exam to preparing for a marathon. You cannot jump out of bed the morning of the marathon and think that you will be able to run successfully, mile after mile, with no training. You must prepare beforehand and you must get ready for your bar exam marathon.
Mentally, you must get yourself comfortable with the idea that you will work every day and that, with proper preparation, you will pass the examination. Winners know the value of preparation. The philosopher, Confucius, once said that “success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation, there is sure to be failure.”
Muhammad Ali, the champion boxer, said that “I hated every minute of the training, but I said, “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”
February 2013 will be your championship moment, don’t let yourself down.

The February 2013 Bar Exam: Plan Ahead and Stick to A Schedule
In order to pass the bar exam in February 2013, you need two things: time-management and discipline. Planning ahead and sticking to a schedule will conquer both requirements. Thorough preparation is the key to passing the exam and having a schedule in place will allow you to manage your time and to stick to a study timetable. For a plan to work, you have to address your learning style as well as the substantive areas you will be tested on.
First make a calendar of the next 3 months – up to the bar exam date in February 2013. Set out a timetable of when and where you will study per day. Be sure your schedule is realistic. If you make it too onerous, you will not follow the schedule and you will put off studying. Be realistic with your goals and your study habits. For example, you can’t go throughout the entire day with no lunch or no exercise or take no breaks because you were unrealistic in the time aspect of your plan. You have to write a study plan that suits you and your personality without slacking off.
In the beginning, you are going to struggle with the voluminous materials, but keep at it and keep pushing the pace. It’s like training for a race. You first have to struggle through the repetition until it starts feeling right and you start performing at your optimal level.
For your schedule, you should first start with relearning and reviewing the outlines with some practice questions thrown in and as you pick up the pace, you’ll reverse it and do more practice questions and essays and only use your outlines for clarification on questions you get wrong or confused about.
Don’t ignore your weak areas or your strong areas. You may not need to schedule as much time in your stronger subjects, but review them as consistently as you do all the other subjects. You may not need to read or reread the outlines of your strong subjects, but during those time periods, practice your questions. You may need those extra points on the bar. For your weaker subjects, don’t spend too much time obsessing on your lack of knowledge or take away from other subjects you also need to study; and do not ignore your weak subjects. All bar examinees have weak subjects. Again, spend time on those subjects as you would other subjects and just keep practicing. You’ll be surprised at how much you really do know in those weak subjects.

February 2013 Bar Exam: Repeating the Bar Exam
The time has come when you must face the fact that you will have to repeat the process of taking the bar exam for February 2013.
It’s time to refocus again on the bar. I’ve had students tell me that they have studied the hardest they had ever studied for anything in their lives for their first bar exam. That’s probably true, but that’s why it’s time to examine how your study. Taking the exam again will call for a change in approach, strategy, and preparation for you to pass that final hurdle in fulfilling your dream of becoming a lawyer. The bar exam is not an academic exercise. The bar examiners want to know whether you are prepared to practice law.
Look at your scores in depth. What areas of the law did you not do well in? Were you weak on evidence or real property? What areas of the exam did you not do well in. Was it the essays, performance test or MBE? That’s where you should start in reformulating how you are going to pass the bar. Did you do well in the essay portion or the performance test but not the MBE? The answers to these questions will determine how to prepare a strategy for yourself as your prepare for the next exam. If you are weak in writing essays, practice strategic writing and essay evaluation; if you are weak in MBE. do more practice questions and, more importantly, critique your subject matter comprehension.
Don’t do the same thing you did for the first bar you took. I personally don’t think that re-attending the same bar review course you took previously is going to help you. You need the extra time to really bone up on those weak areas, without, of course, neglecting the stronger areas of your performance. If you need extra help, see about getting a private tutor who can work one on one with you to keep you sharp and motivated and you” be on the way to passing the bar. Keep working, don’t despair and good luck.

The Thanksgiving Weekend: Do You Know Where Your Bar Exam Books Are?
For those who must retake the bar exam in February 2013, this weekend must be the time to pick up your bar exam books and start studying for a successful bar exam result. You have 3 months to get up off the floor, find a new attitude and tell yourself you will pass this time around.
For repeat takers, if have taken the bar exam multiple times and are still not getting the results you want, think about getting a tutor. There is obviously something about the way you study or how you study that is not producing results for you. A tutor can set up a study plan with you, discuss areas of the bar exam materials that you are not getting and keep you motivated and less isolating.

Foreign Educated Lawyers: When You Must Pass the New York and California Bar Exams
The bar exam results for July 2012 from New York indicated that foreign educated lawyers passed at a first time rate of 46%, and that all foreign educated lawyers passed at a 36% rate. In California, the results are even worse. In July 2011, California’s foreign educated lawyers passed at a 21% rate, with repeat takers passing at only a 14%. Even with one year at a law school, California’s pass rate for foreign lawyers was a 25% and repeat takers were at 15%.
As can be seen, the pass rate is dismal for foreign educated lawyers. That’s why, before sitting for a bar exam, foreign educated lawyers need a bar tutor. Working with a tutor will dramatically improve your chances of passing. Write, write and write some more. An applicant needs to learn to write on the bar exam subjects to both understand the law and to develop a writing structure. Memorize the law “cold” because you have a built in language barrier. You do not have the time to think about the law, you must know it. Above all else, start early.
BarProfessors offer private tutoring for ESL students and foreign educated lawyers for the New York and California bar exam. Please e-mail us at pass@barprofessors.com.

New York Bar Exam Repeat Takers: Start Studying Now for the February 2013 Bar
New York repeat bar exam takers have a disadvantage from many states because of New York’s late release date. The results for the July 2012 bar exam came out in mid November. You do not have had time to process the fact that you did not pass the New York bar exam. Now it is time to take action and make sure you pass the February 2013 bar exam.
For the New York bar exam repeat takers for February 2013 start your preparation now. It’s time now to forget about what happened on your last bar attempt and start anew. For 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time takers, you must obtain a bar tutor. The traditional commercial bar course did not and will not work for you.

July 2012 New York Bar Exam Results: Repeat Bar Exam Takers: A Plan for Success
New York repeat bar exam takers should be very concerned with their ability to pass the New York Bar Exam for a second, third or multiple times.
As we have shown through our blog, the repeat bar exam taker numbers are substantially lower than first time takers. Absent a very structured study bar exam plan, many of the repeat bar exam takers will repeatedly fail the bar until they just give up on their dream of becoming a lawyer. As a law professor, I know too many students in this heart-breaking category. They are devastated with their failure beyond comprehension. They are literally paralyzed with indecision, depression and uncertainty about their career and, more importantly, they question their own ability to pass the bar.
My advice is to start with a very intensive structured plan. Obtain a tutor and, more importantly, believe you will pass. Above all else, do not prepare for the exam as you did the first time. You have to change your approach with a structured plan for success. Good luck.

July 2012 Bar Exam Results: New York and Repeat Bar Takers
Most law graduates are under the false impression that the more times you take the New York bar exam the greater your changes are to passing
In fact, it is just the opposite. The more times you sit for the bar exam, you increase your chances of being unsuccessful.
The statistical proof is clear and convincing that repeat takers continuously do poorer on the bar exam than first time takers. Here are the hard facts:
The New York Combined 2011 (both February and July) bar results indicate that the first time takers from an ABA credited school passed at a rate of 85%. The all taker pass rate (which includes the first time taker pass rate) was 76.9%, which is approximately a 68% repeat taker rate, a clear 17% difference. The New York Combined 2010 bar results indicate that the first time taker pass rate was 84.9%, while the all-taker pass rate was only 77.4%, again an approximate rate of 69% for repeat takers.
These statistical repeat taker numbers are a clear representation that repeat takers, fail at a greater rate than first time takers. Obtaining a bar exam tutor should be the number one goal for all repeat takers.

Passing the New York Bar Exam When English is Your Second Language
The bar exam results for July 2012 from New York indicated that foreign educated lawyers passed at a first time rate of 46%, and that all foreign educated lawyers passed at a 36% rate.
I have been receiving e-mails from applicants who are having trouble with the bar exam because English is their second language. Also, we have had a multitude of people from foreign cities read this blog.
How should a person prepare for the New York bar exam when English is their second language.
1. First, and for most, obtain a private tutor to evaluate your essays. Working with a tutor will dramatically improve your chances of passing.
2. Write, write and write some more. An applicant needs to learn to write on the New York bar subjects to both understand the law and to develop a writing structure.
3. Memorize the law “cold” because you have a built in language barrier. You do not have the time to think about the law, you must know it.
4. Start early.
Implementing the above will help you be successful on the New York Bar Exam.

The New York Bar Exam Results for July 2012: The Pass Rate and Important Advice for Repeat New York Bar Takers
The overall pass rate for New York for the July 2012 bar exam was 68%, with first time takers passing at a 76% rate and with NY schools passing at a 85% rate for first time takers. Non-New York law students passed at 82%. Foreign educated lawyers passed at a first time rate of 46%, and all foreign educated lawyers passed at a 36% rate.
We have been talking with students all day yesterday. The questions we’ve been asked more frequently is “what should I do if I was unsuccessful on the New York Bar Exam?” First, let the shock of failing the bar subside with a few days of reflection.
Clearly, this may be one of your greatest disappointments, but don’t let it control or define who you are. You can pass the bar exam in February 2013. Get right back up and say, “I will pass in February 2013.”
Ok, now let’s start. Do not repeat the same class, study plan or approach you used the last time. It did not work. Coming close on the bar is good only in horse shoes. One size does not fit all. Hard work and having a study plan and study strategy will pay off. Say to yourself, “I will be a lawyer.”
You want to get the bar exam behind you and start your new life as a lawyer. Don’t dither or waste time with the “what ifs”. Stay focused and true to your goal to pass.
Obtaining a Bar Professors New York bar exam tutor will help you pass. Many students who are repeat bar takers need a bar exam coach to help them improve their writing and analytical skills so they can properly navigate through the New York bar exam. Remember, the New York bar exam is unique and more difficult to pass than other jurisdictions. This structured, personalized program is the key to passing the bar for repeat takers. Yesterday, one of our students who could not get above a 118 on her MBE scored 139 and passed her after her third attempt.
Above all, never give up.

Bar Exam Results for July 2012: Why Do Law Students Fail the Bar Exam
Now that most of the bar exam results have been posted, those who have failed their bar exam must analyze their scores and figure out why they failed and how to pass their bar exam for February 2013. Today we will discuss why you failed and, in a later blog, discuss ways to pass the bar exam.
You reverted back to bad writing habits developed in law school.
Under the pressures of the bar exam, many students revert back to bad habits. These bad habits allowed you to graduate from law school, even with average grades, but you cannot continue to write the way you did in law school. Some of your bad habits include, not organizing your answer, no line by line analysis and not answering the call of the question.
You have Poor Preparation and Time Management.
You may have started bar preparation entirely too late, leaving yourself in a rush mode. For the upcoming February 2013 bar, your preparation should start no later than November, 2012. You should allow yourself 5 to 6 hours per day for studying. But more importantly, studying correctly is the key. You need to write and answer many essays and MBE questions. Your answers must be evaluated by a private tutor.
You don’t really believe that you will pass
You may have been that student in law school that got an average to below average grades. Or you struggled through law school. However, in the back of your mind, you know that you were not a good student and you know that the bar exam is hard. You must have a belief that you will pass. Get rid of all negative thoughts, people and things. You must truly believe that you will pass. You must say this every single day prior to the bar and you must have the confidence to succeed.
