Similar to last year, 5 out of the 11 Florida law
schools was below the state average of 67.2% and 4 law schools scored below 60%.Moreover, the difference between the highest
bar percentage of 88% by FIU and Nova, the lowest scoring school, at 43% was 45
points. And this does not include everything we have heard about Cooley and
their horrible bar pass rate. Also, the Florida bar exam results were 4% lower
than last year’s scores. We can just imagine how poorly the repeat taker pass
rate was.
We have interviewed many people on this issue, from
legal schools, bar experts, law professors and even law students.Their conclusions are that, the Florida bar
exam is becoming less predictable and, with multi-subjects tested in each
essay, much harder.Many students go
into the bar exam not understanding the magnitude of the exam and the proper
methodology needed to pass.
However, there is one inescapable conclusion – you
must pass the bar exam.Bar Professors
can help you succeed and guide you through the areas that will help you pass
the bar exam and begin your life as a lawyer.Don’t wait until you take the bar 2 or 3 or even 5 times – get help now
and get the bar exam behind you.

We have been talking to many students who failed the
Florida bar exam.We have been astonished
and concerned at both the medium grade of the Florida bar exam essays and the
scores some repeat takers have been getting. It seems like the medium grade was lower than in past exams, especially
for the last two essays. The medium
grade for the contracts essay was 47, for the family law essay, a 31 and for
the constitutional law essay, a 36. Have we seen such low averages before?
In general, repeat takers do not do well on the Florida
essays because they lack analytical skills, but it seemed, this bar cycle, that
the repeat takers did especially poorly and quite a few of the repeat takers
were essentially slaughtered on these essays.
The repeat takers did poorly on the contracts
questions, usually scoring in the high 30s, did worse on the family law,
scoring on average in the high 20s, low 30s, but did positively awful on the constitutional
law essay. We’ve seen scores of 3, of 13,
of 18.Repeat takers were destroyed on
that essay. Never have we’ve seen such low scores in a Florida essay before.
Remember, that if you blow one essay in Florida, your
chances of failing are pretty high.
Were the essays tougher this bar cycle or did the
Florida Board of Bar Examiners tighten up how they grade the essays?Points open for debate.
Nevertheless, Florida repeat takers must learn how
to write an essay, using their analytical skills to examine the facts and the
law and to write a Florida essay that gets them the score that they need to
pass.
Obtaining a Bar Professors Florida bar exam tutor
will help you pass. Many students who are repeat bar takers need a bar exam
coach to help them improve their writing and analytical skills so they can
properly navigate through the Florida bar exam. Remember, the Florida bar exam
is unique and more difficult to pass than other jurisdictions. This structured,
personalized program is the key to passing the bar for repeat takers.

The Florida bar exam results have come out and all
the repeat takers have gotten their letter telling them the breakdown of the
scores. Here is the way the grading is done in Florida.
Grading
the Florida Bar Exam
The MBE & Florida sections are weighted equally
on the Florida Bar Exam. A combined weighted score of 136 is required to pass
the Florida Bar Exam. It doesn’t matter if your score in one section or the
other is below the 136 – it’s the average score that matters. You can fail the
FL or the MBE section and still pass the FL bar exam if your overall score is
at least 136.
Each examination paper produced by an applicant on
the General Bar Examination will be separately graded. The sum of the converted
section scores is the total score for Part A. MBE scores (Part B) are the
scaled scores on the MBE provided by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
On the Florida portion of the bar, each essay is worth 100 points for a 300
point total. The multiple choice questions are worth 100 points total, so each
question is approximately 1 point each. There are usually 10 experimental
questions. The average essay score is around 40 points, requiring you to get
your remaining points on the multiple choice questions.
Depending on the difficulty of the essay question
and the average grade, the Board of Bar Examiners may adjust your score either
downward or upward. The Board does not adjust the multiple choice questions –
there are what they are and the point totals do not change.
Review your bar scores and ask yourself how you can
improve your scores when you retake the bar exam in February. Obtaining a Bar
Professors Florida bar exam tutor will help you pass. Many students who are
repeat bar takers need a bar exam coach to help them improve their writing and
analytical skills so they can properly navigate through the Florida bar exam.

jurisdictions. This structured, personalized program is the key to passing the

We have been talking with students since Monday. The
questions we’ve been asked more frequently is “what should I do if I was
unsuccessful on the Florida Bar Exam?” First, let the shock of failing the bar
subside with a few days of reflection. Clearly, this may be one of your
greatest disappointments, but don’t let it control or define who you are. You
can pass the bar exam in February 2019. Get right back up and say, “I will pass
in February 2019.”
Ok, now let’s start. Do not repeat the same class,
study plan or approach you used the last time. It did not work. Coming close on
the bar is good only in horse shoes. One size does not fit all. Hard work and
having a study plan and study strategy will pay off. Say to yourself, “I will
be a lawyer.”
You want to get the bar exam behind you and start
your new life as a lawyer. Don’t dither or waste time with the “what ifs”. Stay
focused and true to your goal to pass.

It doesn’t look good for bar exam results July’s bar
exam cycle.
The average score on the MBE hit a recent low in
February, and now the average for the July 2018 test has dropped more than two
points to the lowest figure since 1984.
The NCBE announced that the average score on the MBE
in July fell 2.2 points to 139.5. The
2.2-point drop in the July 2018 average MBE score comes on the heels of a
10-year low for the February 2018 exam. That average MBE score fell 1.3 points,
to 132.8.
That’s just slightly higher than 1984’s MBE average
of 139.21. The average MBE score suggests that pass rates will fall, or at
least not improve, for July 2018 results.
There have been some upticks in some states, but
generally, lower performance and bar passage is expected, according to the NCBE,
especially with this lower MBE score.
In Florida, 67% of July takers passed, down from 71%
a year ago. In Indiana, 62% of July takers passed, down from 66% the previous
year. 86% of first-time takers in Iowa passed, down from 88%. Missouri’s pass
rate was 76%, down from nearly 85% a year ago.
As we know, repeat takers fail the bar at higher
rates than first-time takers. The drop on the MBE score will hurt repeat takers
the most.Repeat takers need every point
they can get.

Exam Results for July 2018 will come out on Monday, September 17th. There is no
magical time it comes out, although the results usually come out in the
morning, usually close to 9 am. Florida releases
the numbers, not the names of the applicants and the site reveals just pass or
fail of both Part A (the Florida section) and Part B (the MBE section) and the
overall pass or fail. When you look up your number there will be 4 columns:
your number, pass, pass, pass. The last pass is your ticket for your law license.
You can fail a section of the Florida bar, and with enough carry over points,
you can pass overall. So you will see some scores, like fail, pass, pass or
pass, fail, pass. That’s ok, because that applicant has passed the Florida bar
exam. Look at the final column and you’ll know whether you passed or failed. The Florida Board
of Bar Examiners also releases the passing rate of the law schools a bit later.
The Florida Board of Bar Examiners releases the passing rate of the law school
to the law school first. Florida only releases the first time taker rate and
not the repeat takers rate, and not the overall pass rate. Good luck to all
Florida takers!

We are a group of law school professors and bar exam experts. We have taken and passed our share of bars and we have all taught bar prep across the country. Presently, we conduct bar review courses for the states of California, New York and Florida. Please go to our website for details. This blog is designed to stimulate dialogue on issues relative to taking and passing bar examinations, including law school discussions. We also like to throw in a few case discussions we find interesting. Who knows, you might see that issue on a future bar exam. We encourage any issue which is relevant to that subject matter.
