The February 2019 Bar Exam: Keep a Limited Study Schedule Through the Holidays

Christmas is on Tuesday, our families are making plans for the holidays, we are doing our last minute shopping and making sure we have our travel plans in place for visiting. Yet, you have the February 2019 bar exam right around the corner.

This is not the time to do round-the-clock studying. You will not be able to keep up a schedule like that anyway and you shouldn’t have to do it during this time of the year. But there are batches of time you can take during these holidays so that you can keep up your schedule plan.

Don’t put the books away. If you are traveling by plane or by train, you certainly can read your outlines instead of playing games or watching movies on your phone. If you are driving to your destination, get some tapes and play them as you drive instead of listening to music to pass the time. You can get an hour or two in for studying every day while you are enjoying the holidays. Think about getting up an hour early while everyone else is still asleep or go to bed an hour early and read your outlines in bed before you sleep.

Also think about taking a few days off completely from studying , i.e Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve– it will refresh your mind and make you eager to get back to work after those breaks.

These study techniques will keep you focused on the job ahead, but also allow you to take the remaining time off and relax with your family. You know that your family will do anything to help you achieve your goal, so let them fuss over you – you deserve it.

It’s quite shocking to hear law students uttering completely bad advice that they got from their school, their professors or their friends.  Here are some of the bad advice that has been told as gospel:

Starting Too Early and Burning Yourself Out

You can never start too early and you can never burn yourself out.  Your job is to learn and understand the law in your jurisdiction and there is a lot to learn. Moreover, the time goes quite quickly.  If you get tired, take a few hours off, even a day off to recharge your batteries.  If you start early, you can afford to take the few hours off.  The earlier you start, the better off you will be. 

If You Do Poorly, Sit Out a Bar Cycle

Why would anyone want to sit out a bar cycle?  You do not need to sit out wasting time, you need to pass the bar exam as quickly as you can.  None of us can afford to waste another 6 months just waiting.  Further, sitting out a bar cycle will not enhance your ability to pass or to even study.

Study Rule Definitions Only and Recite them Perfectly

Many law students think that they only need to memorize rule definitions in order to pass the bar exam.  That is a false assumption. Of course, you need to know the elements of the law, but the facts are what drives the analysis. And that factual analysis is what will ensure that you pass the bar exam.

Read Outlines All Day, Practice Just A Little – A Waste of Time for Repeat Takers

Yes, it is important to read outlines so that you understand the law, however, you need to practice a lot of essays and MBE to ensure that you understand the law and its application.

The February 2019 Bar Exam: UBE and Tennessee, North Carolina, Illinois, Maryland and Rhode Island

The states are adopting the UBE every bar exam cycle.  North Carolina, Rhode Island, Maryland, Tennessee and Illinois  are the latest states to go to the UBE.

Rhode Island is joining the wave of northeastern states that have turned UBE and will administer the UBE for the first time in February 2019.  The passing score will be 276.

 North Carolina will also join its neighboring state, South Carolina, and begin administering the UBE in February 2019.  Their passing score will be 270.

Tennessee will administer their first UBE in February 2019.  Their passing score will be 270.

Illinois will administer their first UBE in July 2019.  Their passing score will be 266.

Maryland will join its adjoining states and become a UBE state in July 2019 with a passing score of 266.
