The February 2019 Bar Exam: The North Carolina Bar Exam

Traditionally, North Carolina bar exam results come out at the end of March.  Last year the results were mailed on or about April 4th.  North Carolina will be coming out in approximately less than a week.  Bar Professors will keep you posted when we hear a definitive date.

As we know, this was North Carolina’s first UBE. But it’s a high score – a 270 for passing.  Neighboring state, South Carolina’s score is 266. It will be interesting to see how the scores go.  Hopefully, we will see a nice percentage jump.

The wait is almost over. There are now only 3 weeks left until the Florida bar exam results will be released. Try to relax – your results are beyond your control now. Bar Professors will release the results as soon as we get them.

The February 2019 Bar Exam: Western State College of Law is On the Brink of Closing

Western State is the oldest law school in Orange County, CA.  It was founded in 1966 but only in 1998 did the ABA give it provisional accreditation and finally, in 2005, Western State was granted full accreditation. 14 years later, Western State is on the brink of closing.

Only about 33% of the graduates got full time JD jobs. In July 2018, about 50% of the first time students passed the bar, the repeaters passed at only 25%.

In January, its owners entered into a court appointed receivership, citing massive debt and litigation. Western State is operated by Dream Center Education Holdings, a subsidiary of the Dream Center megachurch. In February, the US Dept of Education cut off federal student loan eligibility because $9 million dollars that was supposed to be distributed to students is missing.

To avoid closing mid-semester, the court has ordered the receiver to fund the school through May, allowing the 3rd year students to graduate, as the school looks for new ownership.

It looks like a grim prospect.  Should Western State close after the spring semester, it would become the 6th ABA-accredited law school to close or to announce plans to close since 2016.

The February 2019 Bar Exam: Lincoln Memorial and Concordia University Win Full ABA Approval

Both Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law in Tennessee and Concordia University School of Law in Idaho secured full accreditation from the ABA last month.  This leaves just one provisionally accredited law school in the country.

The University of North Texas Dallas College of Law remains the only provisionally accredited school in the nation. Five ABA-accredited schools have closed since 2017 or soon will close.

It took Lincoln Memorial, which opened in 2009, seven years to obtain full accreditation. The school obtained provisional accreditation from the ABA in 2014, which allowed graduates to sit for the bar in the jurisdiction of their choosing.

Concordia’s opened in 2012 as part of the Portland Oregon-based Concordia University. The school received provisional ABA accreditation in June 2015.
